Why Do We Wait Until We're in Pain to Take Care of Ourselves?

It's something I notice all the time. A client will walk into the treatment room apologising for booking.

"I know I should have come sooner."

"I've been meaning to book for months."

"I kept putting myself at the bottom of the list."

And I always find myself wondering: Why do so many of us wait until we're in pain before we give ourselves permission to take care of ourselves?

We don't wait for our car to break down before servicing it. We don't wait until our phone dies before charging it. And yet when it comes to our own wellbeing, we often convince ourselves to keep pushing. To keep going. To carry on until our shoulders ache, our sleep suffers, or our bodies finally force us to slow down.

Somewhere Along the Way, Rest Became Something We Had to Earn

I see this especially in women. Women who are caring for children. Running businesses. Supporting partners. Looking after ageing parents. Working long hours. Women who are incredibly capable, but who struggle to extend that same care to themselves.

Rest becomes a reward for getting everything done. Self-care becomes something that can wait until next week. And unfortunately, next week often turns into months.

Massage Isn't Just About Fixing a Problem

One of the things I love most about massage is that it doesn't have to begin with pain. You don't need to be injured. You don't need to be "bad enough." You don't need to have reached breaking point.

Massage can simply be a space where you pause.

A regular appointment where, for one hour, you stop being everything to everyone else. You breathe more deeply. You notice how your body feels. You reconnect with yourself. Many clients tell me they leave feeling lighter, calmer and more able to cope with the demands of everyday life.

And perhaps that's reason enough.

Prevention Is an Act of Kindness

I'm a great believer that wellbeing is rarely built in grand gestures. It's built quietly. In the choices we make over and over again. Booking a massage before you desperately need one. Going for a walk. Turning your phone off for the evening. Lighting a candle. Getting an early night. Saying no when your body is asking for rest. These things may seem small. But they are all ways of saying:

"My wellbeing matters."

And I think that's a message many of us need reminding of. Because you don't have to wait until you're in pain to deserve care. You are allowed to care for yourself now.
